Warming Weather and Greening Grass Encourage Giants Light Lineup

The last few weeks of late spring mountain snowstorms and follow up rains at first had folks shaking their heads and lamenting another possible delay for our Hometown Heroes to get outside and stretch their legs and arms on the field, but low and behold, the clouds at least for a moment gave way to bright sunshine and wind sufficient enough to dry out the field allowing the Giants to get out and breath the fresh spring air.

clip_image006As if like magic, the one foot of snow present on the infield 3 weeks ago melted away to reveal the brown grass turning green and a rough infield drying out. The only evidence left of our high altitude Rocky Mountain winter, north of the 43rd parallel, is a two foot tall snowdrift on the north side of the centerfield wall.

Legion Players turning out for these first outdoor practices were Ethan Moulder, Patrick Renz, Paul Vik, Colton Reynolds and Carlos Toledo. New recruit, Greyson Buckingham, star quarterback for the Jackson Bronc football squad also has been showing up to try his hand at catching and according to reports, has been hitting the guts out of the ball. According to Coach Pat Euart, the thin roster has forced him to cherry pick from the Babe Ruth league in order to fill out a viable team. The jury is still out as to how many and who will be selected by Coach Euart to participate with the Giants for this season, it all depends on whether or not Charlie Keegan and Lucas Moulder return to Giants Field to do what they do best, rack up K’s and slug for percentages. Babe Ruth swing players showing up for practices have been, Andy Renz, Christian Doyle, Marc Rossolo, Dusty Trieck and Sean Sonderman.

Coaching assistant Charlie Wild as well as Coach Euart threw batting practice and what was seen was nothing short of a hitting display by all players, nothing like the crack of the bat, albeit aluminum, and the sweet smell of springtime to get a fan charged up and anxious for the coming season.

Due to the light Giants roster and subsequent lineup, Coach Euart made a call to the Belgrade coaches to see if he couldn’t include Charlie Wild in the lineup to round our squad out. Since these games were non conference friendlies, they agreed in the spirit of providing a more competitive yet sportsmanlike atmosphere.

When I was a small boy in Kansas, a friend of mine and I went fishing, and as we sat there in the warmth of the summer afternoon on the riverbank, we talked about what we wanted to do when we grew up. I told him that I wanted to be a real major league baseball player, a genuine professional like Honus Wagner. My friend said that he’d like to be President of the United States….Neither of us got our wish.

It’s Spring Again and With Spring, Hope Springs Eternal

January and February, the two months of the year that tend to feel as though they will never end.  March however, not only brings with it the anticipation of snows receding to reveal brownish dormant grass, tulips and crocuses poking their heads up in search of the warming glow of longer sunlit hours but as well, the young of Jackson Hole also come out of their dens in a dull, post-hibernation like trance looking only to feed on baseballs.  Along with these sleepy, boys of summer, are the parents and fans looking for breaks in the weather as well as glimpses in each other eager to start the dialogue necessary to forge in their minds the potential of the impending season.
